Consuls urge more visible security<\/p>\n
DENPASAR: Foreign consuls here have asked for assurance from
\nBadung regent Anak Agung Gde Agung on the efforts to maintain
\nsecurity in the regency, particularly in the aftermath of Oct. 1
\nbombing in its tourism magnets of Kuta and Jimbaran.<\/p>\n
R. Jantzen, German honorary consul in Bali, had asked the
\nregent to ensure a permanent security practice.<\/p>\n
\"The Badung regency should work out a sustainable and
\nmethodical security effort,\" Jantzen was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying on Friday.<\/p>\n
He suggested that uniform security officers patrol the areas.
\nHe said that the presence of security officers in tourism sites
\ncreated a sense of security.<\/p>\n
Jantzen also said the regent should prevent bird flu from
\nspreading in Bali. \"If a bird flu epidemic hits Bali, it will
\nimmediately lose its attractiveness to tourists,\" he said on the
\nsidelines of a lunch with the regent in Kuta.<\/p>\n
I Gusti Bagus Yudhara, the Mexican consul in Bali, also shared
\nJantzen's concern.<\/p>\n
\"We hope there will be a sustainable effort, not just a
\ntemporary one,\" he said. He also suggested the authorities build
\na database to detect potential criminals.<\/p>\n
Regent Gde Agung assured the foreigners that there would be
\ncontinuous efforts to maintain security.<\/p>\n
He said after the Oct. 1 bombing, police had been patrolling
\ncrime hot spots. Volunteers from the local community are being
\ntrained by the police to help in the patrol.<\/p>\n
He said that he would issue a regulation obliging hotels and
\nentertainment centers to install a Closed-Circuit Television
\n(CCTV) surveillance camera as a minimum security standard. \"In a
\nlong run, we plan to install CCTVs at all public places and
\ntourist sites,\" Antara quoted Gde Agung as saying. -- JP<\/p>",
