Construction work hampers shooting training program<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The SEA Games shooting team has stopped training
\nat the Senayan range because the athletes village underground
\nparking lot is being built next to it.<\/p>\n
Anthony Sunarjo, the secretary-general of the Indonesian
\nShooting and Hunting Association, said that part of the range
\nwould have to be torn down during construction of the car park.
\nConstruction would also disrupt the concentration of those
\ntraining at the range.<\/p>\n
The association is sending the team to train at the Armed
\nForces' range in Cilodong, near Bogor, and at other venues which
\nare below international standard.<\/p>\n
\"It really disturbs our training program. Two months (for
\nconstruction) is a long time. If we want to stop Thailand's
\ndomination, our athletes must get used to the venue,\" Anthony
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
After the parking lot has been built, the 40-bay 50-meter
\nrange will be rebuilt. The range, which is used for small-bore
\ntriple, small-bore rifle and free pistol, will be the 19th SEA
\nGames shooting venue.<\/p>\n
The parking lot is expected to be completed by the end of May.<\/p>\n
The Games consortium, chaired by President Soeharto's son
\nBambang Trihatmodjo, is building an athletes village to
\naccommodate about 5,000 athletes during the Games. One of the
\nvillage's 40-story buildings will contain a five-star hotel after
\nthe Games.<\/p>\n
Anthony said the parking lot could be finished on time. \"If it
\ntakes more time, training would not go smoothly.\"<\/p>\n
\"The reinstallation of equipment, if it's inaccurate, can
\ndisturb training. I hope we won't have problems with
\nreinstallation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The International Shooting Federation has checked the venue
\ntwice and stated that it meets international standards.<\/p>\n
China tour<\/p>\n
The Games team shooting director Sita Razni said 12 athletes
\nwould train for two months in Beijing and Shanghai.<\/p>\n
\"We'll send eight running-target male and female athletes and
\nfour-double trap female shooters,\" she said.<\/p>\n
\"We chose to go to China because the Asian and world champions
\nare from that country,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Two Chinese coaches, Hao Yin and Li Wei Kuang, and a local
\ncoach will accompany the athletes.<\/p>\n
Rita said the association would select its Games main squad
\nsoon.<\/p>\n
\"From April 19 to April 26, we'll send air-rifle and air-
\npistol athletes to the Minister of Defense and Security Cup.
\nHopefully we can decide the main squad from the Cup's results,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Rivals<\/p>\n
Games team training director Djoko Pramono told Antara that
\nIndonesia had no new information on Thailand's squad.<\/p>\n
\"It really worries us because we can't observe our rival's
\nstrength. We can't even study their strength in some sports,
\nwhich supposedly belong to us,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Although I have been informed about other countries'
\nstrengths from our embassies, frankly I'm still worried that our
\ndomination in some sports, like wrestling and fencing, can be
\nbroken,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Djoko urged sports organizations to send only their second
\nstring squads to open tournaments so that the Games team's
\nathletes could not be observed.<\/p>\n
\"If we send our main squad to an open tournament, which is
\nusually participated in by ASEAN countries, our strength will be
\nstudied,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Amateur Athletics Association will send 11
\nathletes to Australia on April 10 for the Canberra marathon, and
\nto Bangkok for the Thailand Open from April 22 to April 24.<\/p>\n
Ethel Hudson, Eduardus Nabunome and Suyono will compete in the
\nCanberra marathon, while other eight athletes will compete at the
\nThailand Open,\" said Tigor Tanjung, the Games team athletics
\ndirector.<\/p>\n
The eight athletes to compete in Bangkok are Abdul Manan, Aria
\nYumaiwa, Cakra Hadi Mulya, Engelberth Waiyai, Ismail Sroyer, Ong
