Construction permit for skyscrapers to be reviewed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will review construction permits
\nissued for high-rise buildings built on disputed land or green
\nbelt areas, Minister of Resettlement and Regional Infrastructures
\nSoenarno said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The minister noted that many high-rise buildings in Jakarta
\nand surrounding areas had been built on green belt areas or on
\nland earmarked for other purposes.<\/p>\n
Many other buildings, Soenarno said, had violated the national
\nbuilding standards. For instance, they have no emergency exits,
\nfire extinguishers or helicopter landing pad for evacuation in
\ncase of fires and earthquakes.<\/p>\n
\"We will likely review permits the government has issued for
\nconstruction projects that have violated the law and national
\nstandards,\" he said after attending a plenary session of the
\nHouse of Representatives, held to discuss the construction bill.<\/p>\n
During the plenary session, all House factions gave their
\nsupport for the bill, submitted by the government on May 21,
\n2001.<\/p>\n
Soenarno, however, refused to say whether the government would
\ntake action against those buildings that had violated spatial
\nzoning or national standards.<\/p>\n
He only said that the government would tighten the issuance of
\npermits for construction of buildings, especially high-rise
\nbuildings, in urban areas.<\/p>\n
The minister said uncontrolled issuance of permits for high-
\nrise buildings had caused a deterioration of the environment in
\nbig cities like Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The government has no alternative but to tighten the issuance
\nof permits for all kinds of construction to make urban areas a
\nmore humane and environmentally friendly place to live,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soenarno said the government would also tighten the issuance
\nof permits for housing projects as many developers had broken
\ntheir agreements on building quality standards.<\/p>\n
\"Most of modest houses built in housing subdivisions in
\nJakarta and its outskirts have been renovated by their owners
\nbecause developers have frequently violated the national
\nstandards in developing their housing projects,\" he said. (rms)<\/p>",
