        "content": "<p>Construction employees demand status guarantee<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Medan<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of employees of a regional construction company staged a<br>\ndemo at the city council building in Medan, North Sumatra, on<br>\nMonday demanding a guarantee for their future employment status<br>\nfollowing the state owned firm's management transfer.<\/p>\n<p>PD Pembangunan Medan, a state construction company run by the<br>\nregional administration, plans to transfer the management of its<br>\nAmplas, Pinang Baris and Teladan terminals to the municipal<br>\ncommunications office.<\/p>\n<p>The employees protested against the change from their 12-year<br>\nstatus as regular personnel of PD Pembangunan into casual daily<br>\nworkers following the transfer, without certainty about their<br>\nfixed salaries and old-age benefits.<\/p>\n<p>They urged that city councilors seek the municipal<br>\nadministration's prompt response to the issue, otherwise \"we will<br>\nmobilize all families of the employees to stage a large-scale<br>\nprotest,\" said Triono Hadi, coordinator of the action -- the<br>\nthird so far.<\/p>\n<p>\"Though we get paid below the provincial minimum wages at only<br>\nRp418,000 monthly, our status is legally protected, which is not<br>\nthe case when we serve as casual workers under the communications<br>\noffice,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>Ibnu Hajar, vice chairman of the Medan legislature, promised<br>\nto discuss the fate of the employees in a meeting between the<br>\nmunicipal administration, the communications office and PD<br>\nPembangunan slated for Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PD Pembangunan President Director T.H. Rajagukguk<br>\nexplained to the protesters that the terminal management takeover<br>\nby the communications office was in line with a decree of the<br>\nminister of communications.<\/p>\n<p>\"The terminals in Medan were put under PD Pembangunan's<br>\nmanagement in 1990 by then Mayor Bachtiar Djafar, so it is only<br>\nproper to return their management to the communications office,\"<br>\nhe added.<\/p>\n<p>Rajagukguk, however, declined to comment on the status change<br>\nof its employees under the communications office. \"It is beyond<br>\nmy authority to answer it, just leave the matter to the Mayor,\"<br>\nhe said.<\/p>",
