Conservationists save wounded tiger<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: A man speared on Thursday a caged tigress
\nthat had allegedly killed a six-year-old child, but
\nconservationists are working to save the wounded feline.<\/p>\n
The tiger was speared in its back by the villager, but it
\nsurvived the attack and is being treated by American veterinarian
\nSusan Mikota in the province's capital of Pekanbaru.<\/p>\n
\"Her condition has improved,\" said the head of the local
\nnature conservation unit, John Kennedie.<\/p>\n
He said his team had caught the animal on Wednesday at Basilam
\nHilir village, in the city of Dumai.<\/p>\n
An unidentified villager later approached the caged tigress
\nand speared it from behind, apparently to avenge the death of a
\nsix-year-old child that people believe was killed by the feline.<\/p>\n
Roaming tigers in the area reportedly killed four people
\nthroughout last year. Kennedie blamed the incidents on the
\nanimals' shrinking habitat due to a surge of illegal logging in
\nthe area.<\/p>\n
Some of the tigers have been captured to be sent to Taman
