Conflicting news about anthrax<\/p>\n
The Bogor Veterinary Research Institute and the local
\nhealth agency gave conflicting statements Thursday regarding the
\noutbreak of anthrax in the regency.<\/p>\n
Head of the institute, Darminto, said he had not finished
\ntesting the blood of the eight patients infected by anthrax
\nbecause he only received the samples on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
But head of the health agency Djono K. Kardjoeki said he sent
\nthe samples to the institute last week after the outbreak in the
\nsubdistrict Babakan Madang.<\/p>\n
Darminto said cattle in the regency were regularly vaccinated
\nagainst anthrax.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know why the disease strikes here,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Djono said he did not know if the patients were infected with
\ntainted goat meat or because of spores.<\/p>\n
He said people in the area had been warned to immediately
\ncontact the community health center if they experienced symptoms
\nof the disease.<\/p>\n
Out of the eight patients who had been infected by the
\ndisease, one has recovered.<\/p>\n
Experts said penicillin could cure humans and cattle infected
\nwith anthrax in the early stages. --JP<\/p>",
