Conference on diarrhea held<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: More than 200 local and foreign health experts are
\nattending the three-day Eighth Asian Conference on Diarrheal
\nDiseases.<\/p>\n
Sunarto, the conference president, said diarrhea was highly
\nprevalent in many countries, especially developing ones. In
\nIndonesia, diarrhea causes many deaths and much nutritional
\ndeficiency.<\/p>\n
The conference is being hosted by the Indonesian Society of
\nPediatricians and the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with
\nWorld Health Organization, Unicef and the U.S.-based Basic
\nSupport for Institutionalizing Child Survival (BASICS).<\/p>\n
In a statement delivered by Director General for Communicable
\nDiseases Hadi M. Abednego, Minister of Health Sujudi said the
\nillness was among the top five killers here.<\/p>\n
Eight percent of deaths at all ages are caused by diarrhea. It
\nis estimated the mortality rate due to diarrhea in children under
\nfive is four per 1,000, Sujudi said.<\/p>\n
Robert E. Black from the Department of International Health at
\nJohn Hopkins School of Public Health said developing countries
\nhad been making good progress in combating the illness.<\/p>\n
"However, they still have a long way to go, and much effort is
