Condet: Cultural reserve<\/p>\n

Condet's plight surfaced recently after news emerged of
\nJakarta's interest to buy up the region. The administration plans
\nto do it for preventive reasons, in order to maintain and
\nconserve the Condet area as a cultural reserve in the area.<\/p>\n
The plan has been received with mixed feelings by the people
\nof Condet, to the extent that local public leaders felt it
\nnecessary to issue a press release on the subject.<\/p>\n
It is clear that their fears are not wholly groundless,
\nbecause Condet has been a protected cultural reserve since former
\ngovernor Ali Sadikin's days. There was initially only sporadic
\ndevelopment in the region, of which most appeared in the form of
\nnew houses occupied by nonindigenous people. However available
\nland is now dwindling daily, which places Condet's name as a
\ncultural reserve in disrepute.<\/p>\n
One can imagine that if no preventive measures are taken over
\nthis matter, the cultural reserve could be obliterated from the
\nface of Jakarta. Only its name would be left. That would not be
\nthe only thing, Condet has been the pride of Jakarta as a source
\nfor exotic fruits such as salak (snakeskin fruit) and dukuh, and
\nthe Betawi culture and customs. These too might vanish one day.
\nTherefore, the city administration should pay serious attention
\nto Condet's plight, it should provide proper protection and
\nprevent invasions by nonindigenous people into the area, in order
\nto uphold it as a cultural reserve.<\/p>\n
Aside from that, attention should be given to complaints and
\nfears from people who claim that certain parties have been
\nintimidating the population, and who feel they are in no position
\nto maintain the area for much longer as a cultural reserve.<\/p>\n
There should be no need for more complaints from Condet people
\nas they have been the victims of enough intimidation and their
\nactivities have been greatly undermined, while newcomers have
\nbeen given a big welcome and provided with land, which is
\ndetrimental to the region's survival.<\/p>\n
