Concerns over Thai emergency law<\/p>\n
In answer to coordinated, deadly attacks by insurgents in the
\nYala Province capital last week, the government has given itself
\nemergency powers never seen previously in Thai law. The executive
\ndecree has supplanted the dangerous, murderous assault on Yala as
\nthe center of attention. These new emergency powers appear to be
\nhe wrong response, at the wrong time. Prime Minister Thaksin
\nShinawatra has defended the decree by saying critics are ill-
\ninformed. That response only raises the question of why the
\ngovernment has failed to fully explain the situation, and thus
\nits justification for suspending civil rights. The new law even
\ntakes precedence over martial law declared in the three provinces
\nof the far South last year. Passage of an emergency decree more
\ndraconian than those of military dictatorships raises questions,
\nlike what does the government aim to achieve in the south?
\nMartial law had already set aside many common civil rights.
