Concerns over national unity<\/p>\n
Another new organization has emerged, this time under the name
\nPersatuan Nasional Indonesia (Indonesian National Unity).
\nAlthough it does not want to be known by its initials, PNI, the
\nnew organization is backed by prominent personalities of the old
\nPNI (Partai Nasional Indonesia, or Indonesian Nationalist Party).
\nThe interesting thing is not only that the organization is led by
\nelderly politicians, but that it was established just two days
\nafter the birth of another organization, the YKPK (National
\nBrotherhood Foundation). Like the YKPK, the PNI was presumably
\nborn out of the founders' concern for national unity and
\ncohesion.<\/p>\n
Their names may differ, but what many observers are sensing is
\nthe power game behind the presence of the organizations. It
\nappears as if their founders are preparing themselves for the
\ncoming regeneration of national leadership. As we see it, this is
\nthe political scent behind the birth of the Indonesian National
\nUnity organization as well as the National Brotherhood
\nFoundation.<\/p>\n
The organizations which claim to be concerned with national
\nunity are emerging at a pace disproportionate to the danger which
\nis threatening. We are afraid that the louder people cry unity
\nand cohesion, the greater the likelihood that those cries of
\nconcern will work against the promotion of unity.<\/p>\n
