Computers for Laos, Cambodia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In an effort to keep up with the rapid pace of
\ntechnological development, two perspective members of ASEAN,
\nCambodia and Laos, were presented with computer equipment
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
In separate ceremonies at the ASEAN Secretariat, Digital
\nEquipment's vice-president for the ASEAN region, Graham Long,
\npresented the computers to Cambodian Foreign Minister Ung Huot
\nand Laotian Foreign Minister Somsavat Lengsavad.<\/p>\n
Each country were given a client server system comprising 30
\npersonal computers. One client server is valued at US$200,000.<\/p>\n
ASEAN Secretary-General Dato' Ajit Singh pointed out that
\nrapid communications is essential and with the advent of the
\nASEAN Homepage on the Internet, the computers will allow Cambodia
\nand Myanmar to remain in constant touch with the secretariat and
\nother members.<\/p>\n
\"It will also enable the two countries to keep abreast with
\ndevelopments in ASEAN,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Cambodia and Laos currently hold observer status in the seven-
\nmember association and are expected to become full members next
\nyear.<\/p>\n
The presentation of computers was a result of discussions by
\nthe secretary-general to explore ways to assist new members to
\nupgrade their information technology.<\/p>\n
Digital's Graham Long said the current package is merely the
\nfirst step in the company's efforts to contribute to the
\ndevelopment of information technology of the two countries.<\/p>\n
\"We will explore other means to contribute further to this
\ndevelopment with other relevant programs to facilitate
\ntechnological transfer,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Cambodian Foreign Minister Ung Huot at the presentation
\nexpressed his gratitude at the assistance.<\/p>\n
\"I'm very sure that Cambodia will leapfrog with the latest
\ntechnology and join ASEAN as equal partners,\" he said. (mds)<\/p>",
