Computerized school registration in a mess<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Parents and students have been flooding the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture's city office over the past few
\ndays with complaints of students not being placed at selected
\nschools.<\/p>\n
They questioned the results of computerized student placements
\nat state-run elementary, junior and senior high schools.<\/p>\n
Two hundred and fifty-seven parents and students went to the
\nministry's posts on Tuesday for new placements at schools, the
\nSuara Pembaruan afternoon daily reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The posts were opened Monday in all five mayoralties in
\nselected schools, besides at the city office in response to
\nvarious complaints.<\/p>\n
Students placements were announced across the city on Friday.
\nThe students are obliged to report to their new schools by
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
The office's spokesman, Hadis Hadinegara, said complaints
\nmostly covered four aspects. These were students who had received
\nwritten notices of placements at state schools but were not
\nregistered at the schools.<\/p>\n
The second most common complaint was that people had not
\nreceived notices but were registered with schools as new
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Hadis said the third most common complaint was that students
\nwith good grades had not been accepted into state schools.<\/p>\n
\"The fourth most common grievance covered mistakes in schools
\nfor which students registered,\" Hadis said.<\/p>\n
A parent said she enrolled her child at a junior high school
\nin East Jakarta but received a notice saying her child had been
\naccepted in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Suganda Wirangngapati, a committee member in charge of student
\nselection, said mistakes could be caused by operators, \"whose
\nnumbers are limited\". Mistakes could also be caused by those who
\nincorrectly filled in forms, he was quoted as saying. (anr)<\/p>",
