Computer terms in Indonesian<\/p>\n
Your article of July 21, 2001, titled \"PC software in
\nIndonesian to be launched\", really amused me, especially the
\nterms that are supposed to be used in the software such as
\ntetikus for computer mouse, sandi lewat for password, and most of
\nall unduh for download.<\/p>\n
I can't help imagining a person with a high degree of interest
\nin the computer world rummaging through a web site (in English)
\ndesperately looking for the word tekan tetikus untuk mengunduh
\n(click mouse to download) just because he is accustomed to using
\nsoftware in Indonesian. We must not close our eyes to the fact
\nthat IT development didn't start here, but mostly in English-
\nspeaking countries or, if not, countries that have the same
\nlanguage root as English. Installed software in Indonesian will
\nnot solve the problem as almost all web sites and operating
\nsystems use English<\/p>\n
I think that the software developers have to carefully assess
\nthe long term effect and also the global effect of the
\napplication of such software in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
I am just curious: will Random Access Memory be translated as
\nIngatan Berjalanmasuk Acak? Or perhaps Motherboard will be
\ntranslated as Papan Induk? And what about Joystick?<\/p>\n
