Comprehensive settling of KKN<\/p>\n
From Rakyat Merdeka<\/p>\n
We, who belong to the Alumni Communication Forum of the
\nCatholic Students Association of the Republic of Indonesia, state
\nthat along with the rest of the Indonesian people we congratulate
\nKH Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri on their election
\nby the People's Consultative Assembly as respectively Indonesia's
\nPresident and Vice President for the 1999-2004 tenure.<\/p>\n
In connection with the tasks of and responsibility in leading
\nthe country and exercising governmental authority, we would like
\nto point out to both of you the following:
\n1. The new administration should see that running the state and
\nthe government be consistent with commitments to the demand of
\ntotal reform and democracy already echoed by the community,
\nparticularly Indonesia's young generation\/university students.<\/p>\n
Therefore, efforts to comprehensively settle the cases of
\ncorruption, collusion and nepotism (KKN) of Soeharto and his
\ncronies and the Bank Bali scandal as well as various other
\ncriminal cases that the New Order regime and its proceeding
\nregime perpetrated against humanity must be made right
\nimmediately after the new administration begins to operate.
\n2. Continue with the rearrangement of the political system toward
\na political order which is really democratic on the basis of
\npeople's sovereignty, as one of the main strategies in the
\npolitical realm. At the same time, the reform of development
\nstrategies in the economic sector based on and oriented to the
\ninterest of common people should be made the main frame of
\nreference in state operational policies in the economic sector.
\n3. Scrap the old political morality characterized with the
\npolitical culture, character and mentality of turning power into
\nan end or as an opportunity to gain material wealth as nakedly
\ndemonstrated by the New Order regime\/the Soeharto regime for
\nthree decades.<\/p>\n
At the same time, it is necessary to develop a new political
\nmorality with a political culture, character and mentality
\nplacing power as a way, a means or an opportunity to serve the
\npeople and fight for their maximum welfare and social justice.<\/p>\n
To this end, the new government must not include people who
\nhave been intensively involved in or been part of various abuses
\nof power during the New Order\/Soeharto regime.<\/p>\n
Practices of KKN as manifestations of the abuse of power have
\nbecome their political culture so that involving them in running
\nthe state and the government will only harm, obstruct and foil
\nthe efforts to achieve total reform and democracy.<\/p>\n
Those are our hopes, which may also be construed as a
\nstatement of support for the new government. We pray always that
\nyou will be successful.<\/p>\n
