Complaints on dirty river go unheeded<\/p>\n

Hundreds of villagers in Leuwiliang district, Bogor, have
\nsuffered from scabies after using water from the Cikaniki River
\nto bathe.<\/p>\n
The villagers are forced to use water from the river because
\nof a water shortage in the area.<\/p>\n
\"I am very angry about the state of the river, but I have to
\nuse water from the river because I can't draw any water from my
\nwell,\" said Nisah, 40.<\/p>\n
\"The adults can deal with the scabies, but the children cannot
\nsleep at nights because of the itching,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Zulaeha, who runs the Nurul Iman Islamic boarding school, said
\nthe situation was disrupting the school.<\/p>\n
\"After washing plates in the river, there are always yellowish
\nspots on them. And my students cannot sleep at night because they
\nitch all over their bodies from the scabies,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The villagers allege that the river has been polluted by
\nliquid waste from the PT Bentonit paint factory.<\/p>\n
Officials at the factory could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n
Suri, 42, the head of community unit 05 in Parungsinga
\nsubdistrict, said villagers had filed official protests with the
\nmanagement of PT Bentonit, but had not received a positive
\nresponse.<\/p>\n
However, Leuwiliang district head Tedy Tembang said he had not
\nreceived any reports of pollution caused by the factory.<\/p>\n
He said the factory's liquid waste treatment facility was in
\ngood condition and operated properly.<\/p>\n
He said officials from the district and Bogor regency
\nenvironmental offices had inspected the factory's liquid waste
\ntreatment facility.<\/p>\n
\"I have no idea why villagers are complaining about the
\nalleged pollution of the river,\" Tedy said.<\/p>",
