Competitive business<\/p>\n
I am an Australian Moslem working in a private sector
\nenterprise in Indonesia. I subscribe to The Jakarta Post and try
\nto keep myself informed of current events in the business sector.
\nThere are many articles quoting the government stressing the need
\nto increase exports. I was amused to read recently that high
\nwages were making us uncompetitive on the open market, and
\ncountries such as Vietnam are supplying products to Australia
\nbecause of this factor.<\/p>\n
I believe it is the levies and charges placed upon
\nmanufacturers by governing bodies that make us uncompetitive.
\nAustralia tries very hard to promote and assist these export
\nmanufacturers, with programs such as their private sector
\nlinkages, Aus-Trade and other subsidizing schemes. Indonesian
\nmanufactures receive no assistance, added to this is the
\nabundance of charges both official and unofficial.<\/p>\n
How can you look a lowering wages when the majority of
\nIndonesians now live below the poverty line? The fact that wages
\nare not enough is one major reason for corruption. If the
\ngovernment really wants Indonesian manufactures to become
\ncompetitive on the world market, it should consider the following
\nsteps:<\/p>\n
1. They must stop trying to fill their coppers with
\nmanufacturers money.<\/p>\n
2. Have an all-out drive to stem the flow of unofficial
\ncharges in all sectors.<\/p>\n
3. Set up a body of people to investigate the reported cases
\nof corruption.<\/p>\n
The public must stop accepting corruption as a fact of life,
\nand start saying no to back door payments.<\/p>\n
