        "content": "<p>Company told to pay for ammonia leak<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Food seasoning producer PT Ajinomoto, based in<br>\nMojokerto, East Java, should compensate people affected by<br>\nammonia leaked from its storage cylinder, but closing the company<br>\nis asking too much, a government official said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Teguh Soedarsono, head of the law enforcement information<br>\ncenter at the office of the State Minister of Environment, said<br>\nterminating the company's activities would not atone for the<br>\nsuffering of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's more important to demand the company to be made<br>\naccountable for the incident,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that at least 22 people in Kedondong village,<br>\ndirectly behind the seasoning factory, passed out or had<br>\nbreathing difficulties, while some 400 others were evacuated<br>\nafter the ammonia cylinder leaked on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Mojokerto Police chief Lt. Col. Heru Setiawan said the leak<br>\noccurred while a tanker truck was refilling the gas cylinder on<br>\nthe company compound.<\/p>\n<p>The victims were immediately taken to a local hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The police, in association with a team of experts from the<br>\nGresik petrochemical industry, evacuated about 400 people from<br>\nthe polluted area.<\/p>\n<p>Workers at the hospital said the accident could have claimed<br>\nlives had the rescue been delayed.<\/p>\n<p>Teguh said that the victims, local residents, nongovernmental<br>\norganizations and the government could file lawsuits against the<br>\ncompany.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the leak would not have occurred if the company<br>\nwas covered by environmental insurance.<\/p>\n<p>\"Environmental insurance requires close monitoring by the<br>\ninsurance company, which aims to prevent any claims resulting<br>\nfrom environmental problems,\" Teguh said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government was unable to act as monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Ammonia is a gaseous compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, with a<br>\npungent smell.
