Company refuses to meet its workers' demand<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The management of PT Menara Djaja Industri
\nNasional Indonesia, a manufacturer of bicycle parts, told city
\ncouncilors yesterday that it is unable to meet its workers'
\ndemand for transport and meal allowances.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot afford giving them such allowances because it would
\nforce our company into bankruptcy,\" said Suyanto, the company's
\nproduction manager, who acted as a spokesman for the company's
\nowner.<\/p>\n
Suyanto was accompanied by Mrs. Inneke, the owner of the
\ncompany, during a hearing with the city councilors from
\ncommission E on manpower affairs.<\/p>\n
More than 200 workers went on strike late last month,
\ndemanding transport and meal allowances and representatives of
\nthe workers have met with city councilors. As a result, the
\ncouncilors summoned the company's management for a response.<\/p>\n
Suyanto said that at present his company faces tight
\ncompetition as more and more companies are manufacturing bike
\nparts.<\/p>\n
\"Many companies which used to be in this business went
\nbankrupt. We are among those which have survived the
\ncompetition,\" Suyanto said.<\/p>\n
Many unsold spare parts are lying in the storage, Suyanto
\nsaid, adding that customers often defer their payments while on
\nthe other hand the company has to buy raw materials on a cash
\nbasis.<\/p>\n
During the hearing, Suyanto added the company guaranteed that
\nit will not dismiss workers who took part in the strike, so they
\ndo not need to be afraid. (arf)<\/p>",
