Company denies responsibility for workers<\/p>\n

Director of textile company PT Kawan Kita Sejahtera, Jimmy
\nSitaniapessy, said on Tuesday he shared no responsibility for the
\nfate of 500 workers who had lost their jobs and had not received
\ntheir salaries.<\/p>\n
In a statement made available to The Jakarta Post, Jimmy
\nexplained that the one of the company's assets located in
\nKlapanunggal village, Bogor, had been sold to Korean businessman
\nChong Ok Park from Park and Kwon in 2000.<\/p>\n
\"With the takeover of the factory, PT P and K Garment
\nIndonesia are subsequently responsible for all employees working
\nthere,\" he said, referring to Park's company.<\/p>\n
Last July, the factory abruptly halted operations. The workers
\nhad not received their salaries for the last two months, let
\nalone severance pay.<\/p>\n
Park reportedly had returned to his home country.<\/p>\n
The workers, represented by the Union of Muslim Indonesian
\nWorkers (Gaspermindo), filed a complaint with Bogor's manpower
\noffice, the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, and the
\npolice, but did not receive a positive response.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) listed at least seven
\nsimilar cases affecting thousands of laborers in Greater Jakarta
\nin the first half of this year. All of them were textile and
\ntextile-related producers owned by foreign investors. Most of the
\ninvestors did not have Indonesian partners.<\/p>\n
Last month, about 500 workers of PT Hyungsung Indonesia, a
\nKorean company producing Targus computer bags, took their boss
\nhostage after he abruptly closed down the factory due to
\nfinancial problems and announced that workers would only receive
\none month's salary as severance pay. The workers allowed him to
\nleave after being promised severance pay in accordance with
\nmanpower regulations.<\/p>\n
LBH Jakarta has urged the government to impose firm
\nregulations on foreign investors in a bid to protect workers'
\nbasic rights.<\/p>",
