Companies should train workers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government is urging more state and private
\ncompanies to undertake vocational training to help prepare their
\nemployees tackle the era of globalization.<\/p>\n
After reporting to President Soeharto here yesterday,
\nCoordinating Minister for Production and Distribution Hartarto
\nreiterated that the government gives incentives for companies
\nwishing to run their own vocational education programs.<\/p>\n
Companies can include spending for their own vocational
\neducation programs in their operating costs, meaning that such
\nspending would be exempt from tax and so reduce their overall tax
\nburden.<\/p>\n
\"This incentive is given by the government to encourage more
\ncompanies to establish and run their own vocational training
\nprograms,\" Hartarto told journalists.<\/p>\n
He noted that some 200 companies have conducted various
\nschemes already, ranging from training to establishing
\npolytechnic schools. They include PT Petrokimia Gresik, PT
\nKrakatau Steel and electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara
\n-- all state-owned companies.<\/p>\n
Currently more than 1,000 companies are considered to have the
\ncapacity to establish and run vocational education centers for
\nthe employees of both their own and other companies, Hartarto
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that the government is considering to make it into a
\nnational drive so that in two to three years' time, there will be
\nmore skilled laborers in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Other countries like India, Germany, Japan, Singapore and
\nTaiwan have special laws requiring companies to conduct
\nsystematic vocational education programs, Hartono said. (rid)<\/p>",
