Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Digital, Meutya Hafid, announced that TikTok has pledged to gradually deactivate accounts of users under 16 years old to comply with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Child Protection in Electronic Systems Management, effective tomorrow. While TikTok and platforms like X and Bigo Live have shown partial or full cooperation by adjusting age limits, others such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have not yet committed, with the ministry emphasising that all businesses operating in Indonesia must adhere to local laws without compromise. This move underscores the government's push to safeguard minors online amid growing digital platform usage.

Jakarta - The Minister of Communications and Digital (Menkomdigi),
Meutya Hafid, stated that TikTok has expressed its commitment to
gradually deactivating accounts of users under 16 years old. This
adjustment is being made by TikTok to comply with the implementation of
Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic
System Operators in Child Protection (PP Tunas), which will officially
take effect tomorrow, Saturday (28/3/2026). “TikTok has committed to
deactivating accounts of users under 16 years old gradually,” said
Meutya during a press conference at the Komdigi Office in Jakarta on
Friday (27/3/2026). “Tomorrow, they will announce the operational
roadmap for users aged 14-15 years,” Meutya continued. Komdigi assesses
TikTok’s commitment as partially cooperative towards PP Tunas. “The
direction is already heading there (towards implementing PP Tunas), only
requesting an extension or a little additional time, and this is indeed
what we are also asking for to promptly complete their compliance,” she
added. So far, two applications have been cooperative in fully
implementing PP Tunas for Saturday (28/3/2026). “Platform X has
announced a change in the minimum age limit to 16 years, and this has
already been done well in advance, since 17 March 2026, as stated on the
help centre page,” she continued. Meanwhile, Bigo Live has raised the
age limit to 18 years and above. “Bigo Live has adjusted the age limit
to 18+ in the user agreement or user content and also in the security
privacy policy, and has submitted a request to update the age
restriction to the App Store or application store,” Meutya added.
Meanwhile, Roblox is also said to have shown a partially cooperative
stance and requested time to prepare the technical implementation in its
application. “Roblox has conveyed plans to adjust features for users
under 13 years old, who can only play offline,” she said. Meanwhile,
four other applications have not yet stated compliance with PP Tunas.
They are YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. “There is no
compromise on compliance, and every business entity operating in
Indonesia is obliged to comply with the laws that also apply in
Indonesia,” she concluded.
",
