Committee to verify dumping claims<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The new anti-dumping committee is to announce
\nnext month the results of its investigation into dumping claims
\nby Indonesian polyester fiber producers against South Korean and
\nTaiwanese imports.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Industry and Trade's Director for Textile
\nIndustries, Sakri Widhianto, said the claims have been submitted
\nto the committee and are being examined for their validity.<\/p>\n
Sakri was quoted yesterday by Bisnis Indonesia daily as saying
\nthat the team would release the results of its investigation in
\nAugust, almost two months after the claims were submitted.<\/p>\n
Early last month, the Indonesian Synthetic Fiber Producers
\nAssociation asked the government to impose a 40 percent
\nprovisional anti-dumping duty on polyester fiber imported from
\nSouth Korea and Taiwan.<\/p>\n
According to the association, the imports are sold in
\nIndonesia at US$1 a kilogram, lower than the price of domestic
\npolyester fibers which is now $1.10 a kilogram. The domestic
\nprice has dropped from $1.40 per kilogram in January because of
\nthe cheap imports.<\/p>\n
Prices in South Korea and Japan are still $1.40 a kilogram.<\/p>\n
The association said the alleged dumping practices have forced
\nlocal producers to sell at prices significantly below their
\nproduction costs of $1.30 a kilogram.<\/p>\n
In January, Indonesia imported 43.9 million kilograms of
\nnatural fibre worth $90 million, while synthetic polyester fiber
\nimports reached 1.14 million kilograms, valued at $2.08 million.<\/p>\n
Minister of Industry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo said last week
\nthat the establishment of the Indonesian anti-dumping committee
\ncomplied with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.<\/p>\n
As the WTO guarantees fair trade, Tunky said, Indonesia will
\nalways comply with WTO provisions, including those governing
\nunfair trade practices such as dumping.<\/p>\n
He said the anti-dumping committee opened last month with the
\nappointment of members from the Ministry of Industry and Trade
\nand the Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n
The committee, assigned to counter unfair trade practices by
\nforeign entities, is now handling dumping allegations on imported
\npolyester fiber and steel products, Tunky said.<\/p>\n
He said that business people and legal experts would also be
