PLN independent commissioner Andi Arief says incoming president director Suroso Isnandar is well placed to sustain the state electricity company’s transformation, citing his experience in risk management, projects and renewables. PLN’s plans include about 59GW of new generating capacity by 2034, around 70 per cent of it renewable, alongside more than 700 projects in preparation and construction expected to begin on some projects in 2027.

JAKARTA — Suroso Isnandar’s leadership as president director of
state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) is expected to maintain
the continuity of the company’s transformation, particularly in
developing new and renewable energy. His experience in risk management
and project management is seen as an asset in continuing strategic
programmes initiated under the leadership of Darmawan Prasodjo.

PLN independent commissioner Andi Arief said a change of president
director was a normal organisational development. He was optimistic that
Suroso could continue PLN’s transformation while overseeing the national
electricity development agenda.

“In my view, this change is nothing unusual. Mr Darmawan Prasodjo has
been at PLN for quite a long time. He served as a commissioner, deputy
president director and then president director,” Andi said in a
statement received on Friday (16 October 2026).

Andi said continuity in the transformation was important during the
leadership change at PLN. Suroso had previously served as director of
risk management and as a director responsible for project management and
new and renewable energy.

“This ensures continuity. We hope Mr Suroso can continue the
transformation carried out by Mr Darmawan Prasodjo, with the many
changes made at PLN. So, in my view, there is no problem with this
change,” he said.

Andi said Suroso’s experience was relevant to PLN’s agenda of
accelerating electricity infrastructure development and increasing the
use of renewable energy. The company has several power-generation
development programmes that need to be implemented gradually over the
coming years.

One key item is the plan to add generating capacity by 2034. Andi
said the planned new capacity amounted to about 59 gigawatts (GW), with
renewables accounting for around 70 per cent.

“Looking at the plan through to 2034, around 70 per cent of the
planned power plants will use renewable energy. In the future,
therefore, we will develop various energy sources, from solar, hydro and
wind to nuclear,” Andi said.

Developing the power plants will require infrastructure readiness,
project planning and regulatory support. Andi said all these aspects
needed to be prepared so that construction could meet the needs of the
national electricity system.

Alongside solar, hydro and wind power plants, Andi also referred to
plans to develop nuclear power. However, the project’s implementation is
still awaiting government policy decisions, including choices on its
location and construction stages.

Andi also said PLN had drawn up plans for more than 700 electricity
projects that need to be prepared for implementation. The projects must
pass through several procedures, from planning to tendering, before
construction can begin.

“There are now more than 700 projects that have been designed.
Procedures still need to be completed, from planning through to
tendering. After that, power-plant construction can begin gradually,” he
said.

Andi expected some power projects to enter the construction phase in
2027. Their implementation is expected to increase investment in the
electricity sector and create opportunities for supporting industries,
goods and services suppliers, and workers.

According to Andi, power-plant construction will also play an
important role in meeting the country’s growing electricity needs. A
reliable electricity supply is one of the factors supporting industrial
activity and economic growth.

At the same time, PLN’s transformation needs to remain aligned with
government energy policy. Andi referred to President Prabowo Subianto’s
direction to accelerate the company’s transformation, particularly in
support of renewable energy development.

He hoped Suroso’s project-management experience would help PLN
maintain continuity in its programmes while accelerating power-plant
development. Projects must also take account of efficiency,
infrastructure readiness and the needs of the electricity system.

“The important thing is to continue the transformation already under
way and accelerate power-plant construction. We hope the planned
projects can soon move into the construction phase,” Andi said.
",
