Commission publishes wealth of 57 officials<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A report by the Public Servants' Wealth
\nCommission (KPKPN) detailing the wealth of 57 bureaucrats and
\nlegislators revealed on Tuesday that the greatest personal
\nwealth, standing at nearly Rp 1 trillion, belonged to a
\nlegislator.<\/p>\n
The report also listed the assets of the president directors
\nand chief commissioners of state-owned companies as well as
\nSupreme Court justices.<\/p>\n
The publication of the list followed that of the first one
\nlast Wednesday which revealed the wealth of 47 government
\nofficials, including that of President Abdurrahman Wahid and Vice
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
Megawati and her husband, legislator Taufik Kiemas, topped the
\nlist with total assets of Rp 59.81 billion (US$5.4 million) while
\nAbdurrahman only ranked number eight with total assets of some Rp
\n3.5 billion ($318,181), with almost half of them made up of
\ndonations received during the first year of his presidency.<\/p>\n
As for Tuesday's list, the wealthiest official was revealed to
\nbe Rekso Ageng Herman, a legislator from the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).<\/p>\n
He owns total assets of Rp 94.4 billion (US$8.5 million), or
\nRp 34.59 billion more than Megawati.<\/p>\n
Rekso's assets include lands and buildings worth almost Rp
\n89.4 billion, three cars, five motorcycles, precious stones and
\nmetals, artworks and antiques.<\/p>\n
According to Rekso, most of his wealth was inherited.<\/p>\n
\"The biggest individual item is the (29,250-square-meter) plot
\nof land located on Jl. Jembatan Lima Raya, West Jakarta. It has
\nhouses on it which my family rents out,\" he told The Jakarta Post
\nby phone.<\/p>\n
\"Actually, if the government were willing to build low-cost
\napartments in West Jakarta, I would be more then happy to give
\nhalf of my land there to the government,\" he asserted.<\/p>\n
\"I pay my taxes and all of the assets are under my name so I
\ndon't dare to hide them from the commission,\" said Rekso, who
\nalso owns four door-handle stores in the capital.<\/p>\n
He indeed listed his asset in detail, including such entries
\nas one computer, 6,000 door handles, 24 air conditioners, and six
\nrefrigerators.<\/p>\n
Rekso, whose mother is a native Indonesian and father is of
\nChinese descent, is a member of House Commission VII for
\npopulation and welfare affairs from the former province of East
\nTimor constituency.<\/p>\n
The 54-year-old divorcee, has a doctorate in theology and
\njoined the PDI-P in 1998.<\/p>\n
The second richest name on the list was that of the president
\ndirector of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, Baihaki
\nHamid Hakim.<\/p>\n
Baihaki owns assets worth some Rp 7.15 billion ($650,000) plus
\n$941,161 in cash.<\/p>\n
The assets include lands, buildings, two cars, and bonds, all
\nof which he said were earned by himself.<\/p>\n
While Baihaki owns total assets worth billions of rupiah, the
\npresident director of state-owned PD Industri in West Java,
\nIndradjat Sukarmadidjaja, surprisingly only owns assets worth Rp
\n246.9 million.<\/p>\n
Other less wealthy names on the list are Mohammad Pranowo,
\nproject treasurer at the Ministry of Transportation and
\nTelecommunications, and Komaruddin, the head of physical
\ninfrastructure projects at the House's secretariat general.<\/p>\n
Mohammad claimed that he does not own any land, buildings,
\nvehicles or other valuables. He only filled in the section of the
\nform dealing with cheques and cash, stating a total of Rp
\n1,465,962.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Komaruddin is more fortunate by having total assets
\nof Rp 42 million.<\/p>\n
The richest Supreme Court justice is Muchsin, whose assets are
\nworth Rp 3.19 billion, followed by Toton Suprapto with Rp 2
\nbillion, while Bagir Manan has the least assets with some Rp 600
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Tuesday's list only revealed the wealth of six justices as
\nmost of the justices failed to return the forms.<\/p>\n
Indeed, there are many other officials who have not revealed
\ntheir assets, including House speaker Akbar Tanjung and the
\nSpeaker of the People's Consultative Assembly Amien Rais.<\/p>\n
The recent announcements of officials' wealth were a first in
\nIndonesian history. Observers praised it as a good start, but
\nthey insisted that the declarations made should be verified.
