Jakarta \u2014 The head of Commission III of the Indonesian House of\nRepresentatives, Habiburokhman, has strongly condemned the acid attack\non KontraS (Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence)\nactivist Andrie Yunus and has assured that the commission will monitor\nthe case closely.<\/p>\n
Habib, in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday, said that his\noffice had contacted the head of the Metro Jaya Regional Police and\nrequested that police move quickly to investigate the case and arrest\nthe perpetrators.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will ensure that Commission III continues to oversee this case so\nthat the investigation proceeds swiftly and professionally. We demand\nthat the state fully bear the costs of the best medical treatment so\nthat he can recover quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Andrie Yunus, he added, must also receive maximum protection to\nensure he remains safe from threats of further violence.<\/p>\n
Habib stressed that there should be no tolerance for any form of\nviolence against citizens. All differences of opinion, in whatever form,\nshould not be responded to with violence and thuggery.<\/p>\n
\u201cArticle 28G of the 1945 Constitution clearly stipulates that every\nperson has the right to personal protection and has the right to feel\nsecure and protected from the threat of fear to do or not do something\nthat constitutes a human right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus became the victim of an\nattack by unknown assailants who splashed acid, causing wounds to his\nhands and feet as well as damage to his vision.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred shortly after Andrie had finished recording a\npodcast at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI)\nthat discussed topics of militarism and constitutional testing of the\nArmed Forces Law.<\/p>\n
Based on initial information gathered, the victim on Thursday (12\nMarch) at approximately 23:37 WIB was riding a motorcycle on Jalan\nSalemba I, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Two perpetrators using a motorcycle then approached the victim and\nsplashed acid before fleeing.<\/p>\n
As a result of the attack, the victim suffered burns affecting\napproximately 24 per cent of his body and was immediately taken to\nhospital to receive emergency medical treatment, particularly to his\neyes which were affected by the liquid.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the head of the Police Public Relations Division,\nInspector General of Police Johnny Eddizon Isir in Jakarta on Friday (13\nMarch), assured that police would investigate the case transparently and\nimpartially.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be serious and earnest in bringing this fully to light,\nuncovering and apprehending the perpetrators, whoever they may be.
