Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, has endorsed the National Narcotics Agency's (BNN) proposal to prohibit the circulation of electronic cigarettes or vapes in the revision of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics. This measure aims to sever the chain of distribution for new types of drugs, particularly as vape liquids are increasingly used to conceal illegal substances, posing significant detection challenges for authorities. While supporting the ban, Sahroni emphasised that discussions on the Narcotics and Psychotropics Bill will involve industry stakeholders to find balanced solutions prioritising the protection of the youth.

Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of
Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, supports the proposal from the National
Narcotics Agency (BNN) to ban the circulation of electronic cigarettes
or vapes in the revision of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, or the
Narcotics Bill, to break the chain of distribution of new types of
drugs. Sahroni assesses that firm action is necessary given the high
risk of misuse of vape liquids as a modus operandi for distributing
prohibited substances that are increasingly difficult for officers to
detect. “I 1000 percent agree with the proposal from BNN Chief Police
General Suyudi. This will destroy the nation if not acted upon firmly,”
said Sahroni in his statement on Thursday (9/4/2026). This politician
from the NasDem Party faction views the BNN proposal as an early warning
for national resilience. According to him, if the BNN Chief has
officially proposed a ban, it indicates that the distribution of
narcotics through vapes is already very widespread and far more
dangerous than estimated. “If the misuse is increasingly rampant and
uncontainable, then as Chairman of Commission III, I support it to be
included in the Narcotics Bill,” he said. Although supporting the ban,
Sahroni assures that the discussion process for the Narcotics and
Psychotropics Bill will still involve various parties, including
industry players. He emphasised the need for regulatory breakthroughs
that are solution-oriented with the primary priority of protecting the
younger generation. “That’s why it’s banned in several countries too.
Therefore, there needs to be a regulatory breakthrough. This will be
discussed, and of course, friends in the industry will also be involved.
We’ll find the solution,” he added. Previously, BNN Chief Police General
Suyudi Ario Seto proposed a total ban on vapes and their liquids in the
revision of the Narcotics Bill. BNN highlighted a new phenomenon where
narcotic substances are disguised in the form of vape liquids on a
massive scale, which poses a heavy challenge to drug eradication efforts
in Indonesia. This step is expected to close legal loopholes for drug
dealers who exploit the trend of electronic cigarette lifestyles to
distribute the goods in society.
",
