Commercial dispute center opened by minister<\/p>\n

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-
\nJakti officially opened on Thursday an independent mediation
\ncenter which is intended to help businesses reach out-of-court
\nsettlements in commercial disputes.<\/p>\n
Dorodjatun, in his opening speech, blamed commercial disputes
\namong businesspeople for creating uncertainty in the country's
\nbusiness environment, which contributed to the slowdown in the
\ncountry's economic growth.<\/p>\n
Many such cases have occurred because the parties
\nmisinterpreted the existing laws, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, the role of a mediation center to settle
\ncommercial disputes is important,\" Dorodjatun said in his speech
\nto inaugurate the Indonesian Mediation Center (PMN).<\/p>\n
A speedy settlement of commercial disputes is expected to
\neventually boost the real sector, he asserted.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has become notorious for its corrupt judicial
\nsystem, a situation which has frustrated the business community
\nand created legal uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Denaldy M. Mauna, the chairman of PMN said the center was
\nestablished in line with an increasing need from the public for a
\nfast, effective and efficient settlement of commercial disputes.<\/p>\n
\"Based on experience, such cases have a better chance for
\nsettlements when the parties use the service of mediators,\" he
\ntold The Jakarta Post on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"In mediation, settlement comes from parties involved. What
\nthey get is a win-win solution,\" he said, adding that disputing
\nparties can also save time and money when using the service of
\nmediators.<\/p>\n
PMN is open to any party who wants to resolve a commercial
\ndispute. It offers mediation services for a wide range of
\ncommercial disputes, including wage issues, debt restructuring
\nand big business transactions.<\/p>\n
Members of PMN are professional mediators, most of whom have
\nbeen working at the Jakarta Initiative Task Force (JITF), which
\nhas received praise for its success in mediating disputes between
\nforeign creditors and the country's private sector.<\/p>\n
Established in 1998 upon the request of the International
\nMonetary Fund (IMF), JITF was tasked to help restructure huge
\ndollar-dominated debts owed by the private sector to their
\ncreditors, mostly outside of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
JITF has successfully helped restructure over US$20 billion in
\nprivate debts.<\/p>",
