The Cannes Film Festival means movies: independent, mainstream,
\nhorror, period, trashy, first-rate -- any kind.<\/p>\n
Promotions and press conferences were made to promote films,
\nwhich are not even finished yet. Directly from Cannes, The
\nJakarta Post offers a preview on what will be coming to our movie
\ntheaters sometime soon and a prediction on how well the movies
\nwill work.<\/p>\n
Wolf Creek<\/p>\n
Who? From first timer Australian director, Greg McLean, and
\nstarring three as yet unknown but promising Australian actors.<\/p>\n
What? A horror film, as everything goes awry as three tourists
\ngot missing in the rural Outback.<\/p>\n
They say ... Cassandra Magrath, one of the actresses in an
\ninterview with the Post: \"I don't feel scared at all when
\nwatching the film, because I was involved in its making so I know
\nwhat's going on. It's nice to be on the other side, not to be
\nafraid, as I usually am.\"<\/p>\n
Rating: Despite what Cassandra felt, this film from the
\nfestival's Director's Fortnight selection couldn't be any scarier
\nthan it already is. With thrilling moments from the beginning,
\nlots of satisfying jump-out-of-your-seat scenes, this tale will
\nscare most audiences here.<\/p>\n
A must-see for horror fans, or film fans in general. You'll be
\nscared.<\/p>\n

The Myth<\/p>\n
Who? Jackie Chan teams up with Tony Leung Ka Fai under
\ndirector Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx, Supercop). Bollywood
\nbeauty, Mallika Sherawat costars.<\/p>\n
What? Jackie is Jack, an archeologist who goes along with
\nWilliam, a scientist, for an adventure that leads them to the
\ngreatest discovery in Chinese history.<\/p>\n
They say ... Director Stanley Tong says the movie is like
\nBraveheart, while Jackie confirmed that he did less comedy in
\nthis film, and more drama.<\/p>\n
Rating ... At the conference in Cannes, the press was shown a
\nclip. It looks promising. Jackie Chan dresses in period costume,
\nthere are action scenes all over, with princess-like Korean Kim
\nHee-Seon. Jackie Chan meets Braveheart.<\/p>\n
When? September 2005<\/p>\n
National Lampoon's Pledge This!<\/p>\n
Who? Paris Hilton and some B-class actors directed by William
\nHeins, supposedly famous for making music videos.<\/p>\n
What? Paris plays the president of an elitist sorority at
\nSouth Beach University who presides over a group of unlikely
\nfreshmen girls trying to gain entrance and acceptance into the
\nsorority.<\/p>\n
They say ... At a press conference in Cannes, Paris said,
\n\"This is a very sexy movie. It's all about hot sorority girls in
\ncollege, and everybody's beautiful. It's hot, and there are some
\nsexy scenes that I'm in.\"<\/p>\n
Rating ... We're buying it, Paris. Who really cares if she can
\nact or not?<\/p>\n
When? 2006<\/p>\n
Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction<\/p>\n
Who? Sharon Stone without Michael Douglas, with addition of
\nBritish David Morrissey, Charlotte Rampling and David Thewlis. No
\nPaul Verhoeven, either.<\/p>\n
What? Stone is back as Catherine, playing mind games with the
\nambitious and arrogant Dr. Andrew Glass, a renowned shrink who is
\nbrought in by the police to see if Catherine is fit to stand
\ntrial. She has been charged with the murder of her fiancee, Larry
\nHouseman. The setting moves to London.<\/p>\n
Rating ... In Cannes, Stone commented on Douglas' replacement,
\nMorrissey: \"He's very handsome and if you've seen his work, you
\nknow he's an exquisite actor. I really enjoyed working with him
\nbecause he's so funny, talented and sexy.\"<\/p>\n
Rating ... It's not Morrissey we want to see, but Stone back
\nin the role that shot her to fame. But there's always a risk when
\nit comes to reprising a popular role. Lack of Verhoeven's
\ndirection may have damaged the film too.<\/p>\n
