        "content": "<p>Combating poverty<\/p>\n<p>From Pikiran Rakyat<\/p>\n<p>I agree with Atang Ruswita (Pikiran Rakyat, Dec. 13, 1996)<br>\nthat poverty should be eradicated and that mosques should be the<br>\ncenters for combating poverty, ignorance, backwardness and lust.<\/p>\n<p>But which should we eradicate first? Poverty and ignorance are<br>\nrelated, and one could say that ignorance leads to poverty, or<br>\nthe other way around.<\/p>\n<p>As for ignorance, I prefer the term backwardness. Backwardness<br>\nis universal and refers to a way of thinking, attitude and<br>\nvision, while ignorance tends to mean in a particular field.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, social ills must be eradicated and social<br>\nsolidarity employed to overcome physical and mental problems.<\/p>\n<p>A.
