College students take to streets<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of students from the city's biggest
\nprivate university took to the streets yesterday, stopping buses
\nand looking for high school students who had allegedly attacked
\ntheir campus earlier in the day.<\/p>\n
The students of Trisakti University economic school were angry
\nafter they learned that their campus on Jl. Achmad Yani in East
\nJakarta had been attacked by unknown high school students,
\naccording to several eyewitnesses.<\/p>\n
However a police officer at the Cempaka Putih police sub-
\nprecinct could not confirm whether the campus had been attacked
\nby several high-school students as no reports have been filed
\nwith the precinct on the matter.<\/p>\n
Fifty police officers from the Central Jakarta police precinct
\nhelped by several military officers armed with rattan shields and
\nwooden sticks were assigned to disperse the rioting students.<\/p>\n
They arrested Iwan, 26, on suspicion of provoking the
\nuniversity students. \"Iwan claimed that he was a Trisakti
\nUniversity student, but after we asked for his I.D. card we
\ndiscovered he is not a student at the university,\" an officer
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The incident, which started at 12 p.m, held up traffic on the
\nstreet for almost three hours.<\/p>\n
A private television station's cameraman was asked by the
\nangry students to give his video cassette to them. Other
\nreporters swiftly hid their cameras for fear that they would be
\ntaken as well.<\/p>\n
Some high school students who happened to be on the buses
\nstopped by the university students offered resistance, while
\nothers tried to escape.<\/p>\n
The action came a day after a brawl at the university's
\nheadquarters on Jl. Kyai Tapa, in West Jakarta, on Wednesday in
\nwhich around 5,000 university students stopped passing buses to
\nlook for a technical high school student who had allegedly
\nstabbed their fellow student, Rachmat Chandra, 21.<\/p>\n
Rachmat was reportedly mobbed by a group of high-school
\nstudents and was stabbed by one the assailants on Wednesday
\nmorning. He reportedly suffered severe injuries to his stomach
\nand head.<\/p>\n
Today's incident has shocked many people, especially since it
\ntook place at a time when police and security officers are
\nintensifying crackdowns on student disputes which have recently
\nflared up in the city.<\/p>\n
The city police yesterday continued the operation on student
\nbrawls and apprehended around 200 high school students in the
\ncity.<\/p>\n
The Central Jakarta Police seized three machetes, one sword,
\n15 belts which had bicycles cogwheels or larger steel discs in
\nthe place of buckles, and hundreds of barbiturate pills.<\/p>\n
Some 50 technical high school students in Central Jakarta
\naboard a bus were stopped and taken away in police trucks.<\/p>\n
The police found three machetes and a whip which was made from
\na fish tail among the students.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the South Jakarta Police apprehended about 80
\nstudents. Most of them were caught at Block M mall, the city's
\nbiggest shopping center.<\/p>\n
Some parents of students who were apprehended on Wednesday
\nwere seen at the police station, looking for their sons.<\/p>\n
The police later released the students, who spent the night at
\nthe police precinct after they signed statements saying they will
\nno longer become involved in brawls.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Military Command Chief Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso said on
\nWednesday that his command will set up a Military Command School.
\nSuch a school is to be set up to train students under strict
\nmilitary discipline.<\/p>\n
In the last seven days, three teenagers, including a 13-year-
\nold junior high school student, have been killed in brawls. (04)<\/p>",
