        "content": "<p>Collection of door-to-door donations illegal: Official<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city administration does not permit any<br>\nsocial organization to collect donations door-to-door, an<br>\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the city social agency, Emon Setia Sumantri, said<br>\nthat social organizations are allowed to collect donations only<br>\nthrough activities, like bazaars or other social gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>Asking offices or householders for donations is an illegal<br>\nactivity, Emon said.<\/p>\n<p>He said permits from the governor for the collection of funds<br>\nstate clearly the purpose of the donations and how the funds to<br>\nbe collected -- never including door-knocking.<\/p>\n<p>Many offices and individuals have complained about people,<br>\nclaiming to be from various organizations, asking for donations.<br>\nSuch fund-raisers frequently impose on office managers and<br>\nprivate citizens to buy books, photographs of VIPs, calendars and<br>\nother products.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent complaints have been lodged with the police by<br>\n170 Japanese businessmen. The businessmen said they hoped that<br>\nthe police would take the problem seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Don&apos;t accept anybody asking for donations,&quot; Emon said<br>\nyesterday, adding that his office welcomes any reports on such<br>\nproblems.<\/p>\n<p>He promised to help deal with the problem by asking city<br>\npublic order officers to arrest donation collectors.<\/p>\n<p>He added that there are currently a total of 852 registered<br>\nsocial organizations in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Toha Reno, an official of the city public order office, said<br>\nthat his office faces difficulties in handling the illegal fund-<br>\nraising activities.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that the matter becomes particularly sensitive<br>\nif the people claiming to be collecting money for certain<br>\norganizations say the money is for religious activities.<\/p>\n<p>In many areas in Jakarta residents have also complained about<br>\npeople asking for donations for the building of mosques or<br>\norphanages in remote villages near Bogor or other towns in West<br>\nJava.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I think people should turn them away,&quot; Toha said, adding that<br>\nin the mean time the city administration intends to continue<br>\ncombating such activities.(yns)<\/p>",
