Collapsed bridge isolates West Sumba<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: People in the West Sumba regency on
\nSumba island face isolation after heavy rainfall on Monday tore
\ndown the only bridge connecting the regency with supplies of
\nbasic commodities from East Sumba.<\/p>\n
West Sumba's population of more than 300,000 people receive
\ntheir supplies of basic commodities from a port in Waingapu
\nlocated in East Sumba.<\/p>\n
\"The collapse of the bridge at Lindiwacu (river) will disrupt
\naccess between the West Sumba and the East Sumba regencies,\" said
\nEast Nusa Tenggara council member Umbu Pura Woha on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said the only way now for people to travel between the two
\nregencies was to cross the river Lindiwacu.<\/p>\n
According to him, it will take some time before the local
\nadministration could rebuild the bridge.<\/p>\n
But activities like the distribution of West Sumba
\nagricultural products to outside the Sumba island, and the
\nsupplies of basic commodities into Sumba will continue albeit

'Batam TV' to widen coverage<\/p>\n
BATAM: Despite protests from neighboring Singapore and Malaysia
\nabout overlapping frequencies, Batam's first local television
\nstation, Batam TV, plans to widen its broadcasting coverage to
\ninclude the whole island as well as Singapore.<\/p>\n
Batam TV director Mafirion said on Thursday it planned to move
\nits broadcasting antenna to a new location where the signal was
\nstronger. He said the plan followed a study from a Bandung-based
\nconsulting team Batam TV had hired.<\/p>\n
\"We've received recommendations on a number of good locations,
\nbut based on economic considerations Batam TV will soon broadcast
\nfrom a new location at Hotel Nagoya,\" said Mafirion.<\/p>\n
The television station currently airs from Batam's Carnival
\nMall area, located on the northern tip of the island closest to
\nSingapore. Hotel Nagoya Plaza is located some 20 kilometers south
\nof Carnival Mall, at the center of the island where the land is
\nmore elevated.<\/p>\n
Mafirion said that from Nagoya Batam TV should be able to
\nbroadcast its programs to all areas of the island as well as
\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
Batam Mayor Nyat Kadir launched Batam TV and Radio Hang FM on
\nJanuary 18, 2003. But their presence drew protests from several
\ntelevision and radio stations in Singapore and Malaysia because
\ntheir frequencies overlapped.<\/p>\n
The ministry of telecommunication in Jakarta has ordered Batam
\nTV and Radio Hang FM to stop operating. It said neither had an
\noperation permit, hence the overlapping frequencies.<\/p>\n
Batam TV has said it was working on acquiring the permits. It
\nnow airs 12 hours a day and has eight reporters to cover news on
