Coitus common among students: Study<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A study of 558 high-school students reveals that
\nsex among classmates after watching pornographic videos has
\nbecome common practice among some Jakarta students.<\/p>\n
Speaking in a one-day seminar on juvenile delinquency here
\nyesterday, Heru Prasadja, from the Catholic-based Atmajaya
\nUniversity, quoted the data from the study as saying that the
\nconsumption of drugs and alcoholic beverages has also been quite
\npopular among students at both junior and senior high schools in
\nthe city.<\/p>\n
The study was conducted over four months by undercover agents
\nof the National Police Headquarters and the university. The study
\nsurveyed those 558 high school students that have recorded the
\nhighest number of student delinquency cases over the past few
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
"We just learned of this during the in-depth interviews with
\nthe students in the study," Heru told The Jakarta Post during a
\nbreak at the seminar.<\/p>\n
According to the students, they normally have sexual
\nintercourse with their schoolmates just after watching porn
\nvideos, said Heru, who is also head of the study project.<\/p>\n
"Some of them admitted that they did it after reaching a
\nmutual agreement," he told the seminar held at the university.<\/p>\n
Without giving detailed figures, Heru believed that the study
\nshowed that the number of occurrences has reached critical levels
\nin many junior and senior high schools in the city.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government strictly bans the distribution of
\nporn videos and laser discs although some video rental outlets
\nare still offering them to their customers.<\/p>\n
City Police, for example, have confiscated hundreds of porn
\nvideos and LDs along with high-grade alcohol and drugs in a
\nseries of raids over the past few years.<\/p>\n
Complicated<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the unexpected findings of the study,
\nformer chief of the Central Jakarta police precinct Lt. Col.
\nDadang Garnida, who has been handling juvenile delinquents for
\nyears, replied: "The problems of the students are very
\ncomplicated."<\/p>\n
"Everyone in their surroundings has to help resolve the
\nproblems that have led the students down the wrong path," said
\nDadang, who is now head of the Palembang city police in South
\nSumatra.<\/p>\n
Dadang was one of 300 participants, including high school
\nstudents, attending yesterday's seminar, which was opened by
\nrector of the Atmajaya University Mrs. Mariana Setiadarma. Other
\nspeakers included Col. I Wayan Sutayana from the Police High
\nSchool (PTIK) and psychologist Irwanto from Atmajaya University.<\/p>\n
Most speakers blamed the parents and the students'
\nsurroundings and the bad attitudes of their friends as the main
\nfactors stimulating teenagers to do such things.<\/p>\n
The study also revealed that out of the 558 student
\nrespondents, 44.7 percent admitted to having been involved in
\nstudent brawls, 18 percent have carried sharp weapons and 22
\npercent have wounded other people.<\/p>\n
Most of them also confessed to having scrawled graffiti over
\nmany location in the city.<\/p>\n
According to data available in the seminar, eight students
\nhave dead, seven have been injured and 111 have been arrested in
\nthe 59 brawls recorded last year. The clashes damaged at least
\n390 city buses.<\/p>\n
The data also showed that student brawls took place mostly
\nbetween 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and during the first and second months
\nof the school year.<\/p>\n
More than 85 percent of the schools whose students were
\ninvolved in the brawls were those from the privately-owned senior
\nhigh schools, especially vocational schools.<\/p>\n
On each raid, police usually confiscated a wide range of
\ncontraceptive devices, porn magazines and videos, bottles of
\nspirits, cigarettes and large numbers of weapons and tools from
\nthe students' schoolbags. They also seized other weapons like
\nscrewdrivers, stones, knives and sizable nails. (bsr)<\/p>",
