Coastal erosion and tidal flooding continue to pose challenges for\nthe coastal area of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency. To support the\nrestoration of the coastal ecosystem, PT Hankook Tire Indonesia has\nagain planted thousands of mangrove seedlings in Pantai Sederhana\nVillage, coinciding with the commemoration of World Environment Day.<\/p>\n
The activity continues a mangrove rehabilitation programme that the\ncompany has been running over recent years. By 2026, a total of 13,000\nmangrove seedlings had been planted in the Muara Gembong area.<\/p>\n
The mangrove planting is conducted as an effort to restore the\ncoastal ecosystem, which faces pressure from erosion, shoreline changes,\nand the impacts of climate change. This programme is also aligned with\nthe government\u2019s efforts to accelerate the rehabilitation of national\nmangrove areas.<\/p>\n
Mangrove ecosystems play an important role in protecting coastal\nareas. Besides functioning to prevent erosion and mitigate wave impact,\nmangrove areas also serve as habitats for various species of fish,\nshrimp, and other coastal biota that support the economic activities of\nlocal communities.<\/p>\n
President Director of PT Hankook Tire Indonesia, Jung Jinkyun, stated\nthat mangrove planting is one of the environmental programmes the\ncompany runs sustainably. \u201cMangrove planting activities remain one of\nHankook\u2019s main agendas for the environment and the communities\nsurrounding our operational areas. Through this initiative, we also\nencourage collaboration between employees and local communities as part\nof a joint effort to preserve the coastal ecosystem,\u201d said Jung\nJinkyun.<\/p>\n
Prior to the planting activity, participants received education on\nthe ecological functions and economic benefits of mangroves for coastal\ncommunities. In addition to supporting capture fisheries, mangrove areas\nalso hold economic potential through the development of processed\nproducts and ecotourism.<\/p>\n
Head of Environmental Management at the Bekasi Regency Environmental\nAgency, Donny Arief Budiman, stated that mangrove rehabilitation is an\nimportant step to strengthen the protection of coastal areas affected by\nerosion and tidal flooding. \u201cWe appreciate Hankook\u2019s efforts in\nconsistently carrying out environmental conservation activities through\nthis mangrove planting. As we know, tidal flooding remains a challenge\nin the Muara Gembong area from year to year due to erosion and shoreline\nchanges, so coastal ecosystem rehabilitation efforts like this have an\nimportant role in supporting area protection and the environmental\nsustainability of the surrounding community,\u201d said Donny.<\/p>\n
According to Donny, coastal area conservation requires collaboration\nfrom various parties, including the government, the community, and the\nprivate sector, so that ecosystem restoration can proceed more\neffectively and sustainably.<\/p>\n
In addition to supporting coastal environmental protection, mangrove\nrehabilitation is also considered to contribute to climate change\nmitigation efforts.
