Speaking during a\nconsolidation meeting for the Sulawesi and Papua regions in Makassar on\nWednesday, he stated that this shift must be balanced with the\nprotection of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities who\ndepend on forest areas. He assessed that experiences in Sulawesi and\nPapua demonstrate persistently high levels of tenure conflict, slow\nrecognition of customary territories, and the encroachment of investment\ninto the living spaces of indigenous communities. Consequently, the\ncoalition is advocating for forestry governance reform that is oriented\ntowards the recognition of indigenous rights, tenure justice, respect\nfor the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and the\nprotection of environmental defenders. Arnold from Panah Papua added\nthat forest sustainability will remain unattainable as long as the\ncommunity\u2019s right to their living space is treated merely as an\nadministrative matter. The coalition also called on the government, the\nHouse of Representatives, regional administrations, businesses, and all\nstakeholders to ensure the deliberation of the Forestry Bill results in\nregulations that guarantee the protection of indigenous rights, expand\npublic participation, and support forest conservation.<\/p>",
