The first round of the presidential election enabled
\nIndonesians to exercise their sovereignty by directly voting for
\ntheir favorite candidate. Now the General Elections Commission
\nhas announced the two candidates for the second round of the
\nelection.<\/p>\n
This event suggests a fundamental change in the execution of
\npeople's right to elect their leaders, which is now done directly
\ninstead of through their representatives, as was the case for
\nover 30 years under the New Order regime.<\/p>\n
Now in the reform era, the first round of the presidential
\nelection offered five pairs of presidential and vice presidential
\ncandidates. In the coming runoff, only two of the five pairs of
\ncandidates are remaining.<\/p>\n
The second round, scheduled for Sept. 20, is only about a
\nmonth away. Media reports describe how political parties are
\nseeking coalitions with one another, while other parties are
\nremaining neutral.<\/p>\n
The question is: By making such moves, where are these parties
\nlading the population? Voters elect their leaders by using their
\nconscience and reasoning, whereas the parties employ their
\npolitical machinery and public figures. Here lies the dilemma of
\ncoalitions.<\/p>\n
