Coalbed methane's project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State oil and gas company Pertamina and the
\ncountry's largest oil company PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia are
\ndeveloping a coalbed methane reserve in Ombilin, West Sumatra, in
\nan effort to find alternative energy, Minister of Mines and
\nEnergy Kuntoro Mangkusubroto said Friday.<\/p>\n
\"Bestowed with large coal reserves, the potential of coalbed
\nmethane as an alternative energy source is worth considering,\"
\nthe minister said.<\/p>\n
He said the government appointed Pertamina and Caltex,
\ntogether with the ministry's Directorate General of Oil and Gas,
\nto develop coalbed methane, which is also known as light
\nparaffin, in Ombilin, as a pilot project.<\/p>\n
The project is expected to start production in 2002, he said.<\/p>\n
He said coalbed methane has been widely developed as an
\nalternative energy in many countries since 1980s.<\/p>\n
According to a survey, the open-pit Ombilin coal mine contains
\na potential reserve of 1.2 trillion cubic feet of coalbed methane
\nat an average depth of 2,935 feet. (jsk)<\/p>",
