Coal liquefaction plant expected in 2007<\/p>\n

The Agency for the Study and Application of Technology (BPPT)
\nsaid on Wednesday it expected to be able to complete its coal
\nliquefaction plant project in 2007.<\/p>\n
The BPPT's coal liquefaction program manager Hartiniati
\nSoedioto said that construction of the plant would start next
\nyear.<\/p>\n
The plant is designed to transform coal into a liquid form
\nthat could act as a substitute petroleum and source of energy in
\nthe future as oil becomes scarcer.<\/p>\n
The BPPT is collaborating with Japan's New Energy and
\nIndustrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to develop
\nthe technology and design the plant.<\/p>\n
According to a BPPT-NEDO study, coal can be transformed
\nthrough chemical processing into a synthetic fuel oil that is
\nsuitable for transportation.<\/p>\n
The coal liquefaction plant will be located in the Banko area
\nof South Sumatra.<\/p>\n
The BPPT is designing three types of plants with respective
\ncapacities of 6,000 tons per day, 12,000 tons per day, and 30,000
\ntons per day.<\/p>\n
The agency is also inviting private investors to participate
\nin the project.<\/p>\n
The BPPT said that the commercial operation of the plant would
\nstart in 2011.<\/p>\n
Hartiniati expected the BPPT to be able to establish a group
\nof domestic companies interested in pioneering the
\ncommercialization of coal liquefaction in Indonesia.<\/p>",
