Clove monopoly enhanced<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Industry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo
\nhas issued a ruling to strengthen the clove trading monopoly of
\nthe privately-run Clove Stock Management Agency (BPPC).<\/p>\n
In Ministerial Decree No. 313\/MPP\/Kep\/9\/1997, dated Sept. 9,
\nTunky said only BPPC could trade or transport cloves via land,
\nsea and air.<\/p>\n
The agency's chairman, President Soeharto's youngest son
\nHutomo Mandala Putra, was granted the clove-trading monopoly in
\nearly 1991.<\/p>\n
Since then, farmers have been obliged to sell their cloves to
\nthe agency -- through village cooperatives -- and producers of
\nclove-blended cigarettes must buy their supply from BPPC.<\/p>\n
According to the new ruling, as reported by Antara, all clove
\ntransportation within a province must have the appropriate
\ndocumentation issued by the provincial industry and trade office.<\/p>\n
Interprovincial transportation of cloves to cigarette
\nmanufacturers also requires the correct paperwork.<\/p>\n
The new ruling also appointed state-owned surveying firm PT
\nSucofindo to test the quality of cloves transported to cigarette
\nmanufacturers.<\/p>\n
Sucofindo is also authorized to check the quality of imported
