Closed door busing policy remains in effect<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A city police officer says that the ongoing
\nruling which requires the doors of public transit vehicles to
\nremain closed while in motion will remain in effect.<\/p>\n
The temporary exemption from the ruling for Mikrolet and other
\nbuses with fewer than 12 seats as well as those operating on the
\noutskirts of the city will soon end, Col. Hotman Siagian, head of
\nthe City Traffic Police Directorate, said.<\/p>\n
\"Officers of related institutions are currently studying which
\nof the three prototypes now being tested is the most effective
\nand low-cost model,\" Hotman told reporters here Wednesday
\nevening.<\/p>\n
When the officers have completed their work, all public
\ntransport vehicles which are currently being exempted from this
\nclosed-door policy must be equipped with the selected model for
\nclosing the doors while in motion, he explained.<\/p>\n
Owners and drivers of such vehicles have strongly protested
\nthe ruling, stating that they could not find appropriate
\nadditional equipment for closing the doors of their vehicles.<\/p>\n
They complained that they could not hire anyone to help them
\nclose the doors because they would have to share their daily
\nearnings.<\/p>\n
\"Should I get out of my car to close the door every time a
\npassenger boards?\" Hotman quoted one driver as complaining.<\/p>\n
All three prototypes, taken from various sources, including
\nthose used by public transit vehicles in Bandung, West Java, are
\ncurrently being studied jointly by officers from the City Police
\nHeadquarters, the City Traffic and Land Transportation Control
\nAgency and the Association of the Land Transportation Owners'
\nAssociation.<\/p>\n
\"We have agreed not to set a deadline for the studies as well
\nas the use of the selected prototype because we are worried that
\ncertain parties would take advantage of this,\" Hotman said.<\/p>\n
Hotman also insisted that vehicle owners be allowed to make
\ntheir own tools as long as they conform with basic requirements
\nand are safe for passengers.<\/p>\n
Asked to comment on public complaints about the ruling, he
\njokingly replied, \"If the air inside the bus becomes hotter due
\nto the ruling, why don't they get a truck?\"<\/p>\n
Hotman said that the problem can be solved as long as the
\npassengers and bus crew show the will to cooperate with each
\nother.<\/p>\n
\"Ask them to open the windows and refrain from smoking. It's
