'Close unregistered technical schools'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The director general of basic and middle
\neducation, Zaenal Arifin Achmady, wants unregistered privately
\nowned technical high schools closed down.<\/p>\n
Achmady said there were many technical high schools which
\noperate in any old way. \"They illegally tell their students to
\ntake final examinations at registered schools,\" he was quoted by
\nKompas as saying Saturday.<\/p>\n
He called on the Education and Culture Office to take proper
\nsteps against such schools. \"Just close them. And report to the
\npolice if they are stubborn.\"<\/p>\n
The head of the vocational training department at the
\nEducation and Culture Office, Kasito, acknowledged in a separate
\ninterview that several technical high schools did not have
\npermits to operate. But he was reluctant to reveal the number and
\nnames of the schools. \"We are still working on this,\" he said,
\npromising to announce the details Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Rumor has it that students of most unregistered technical high
\nschools are notorious for brawling.<\/p>\n
According to the Education and Culture Office, brawls in the
\ncity mostly involve students of 50 senior high schools, 40 of
\nwhich are privately owned technical high schools.<\/p>\n
Jakarta has 564 state and private senior high schools.<\/p>\n
The schools whose students become involved in brawls are
\ninferior as they do not have laboratories and the teachers
\nusually lack discipline, Kasito said.<\/p>\n
Neither Kasito or Achmady said why the government has let such
\nschools operate.<\/p>\n
According to Achmady, the inferior schools need help to
\nimprove. \"The Education and Culture Office should approach the
\nfoundations which manage the schools and tell them to set aside
\nmoney to improve the schools' performances,\" Achmady said.<\/p>\n
Achmady said the government should not issue any permits for
\nnew private technical high schools, unless the foundations are
\nwilling to provide laboratories and workshops.<\/p>\n
There are currently 107 private technical high schools in
\nJakarta and only 37 of them meet the minimum standard set by the
\ngovernment, Achmady said. \"Only eight technical high schools are
\ngood in Jakarta. While 81 lack facilities, such as labs and
\nworkshops.\"<\/p>\n
The head of City Education and Culture Office, Kusnan
\nIsmukanto, once suggested that inferior technical high schools
