        "content": "<p>Clinton lends support to APEC ideals<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Bill Clinton's arrival in Jakarta yesterday,<br>\naccompanied by many of his administration's prominent members,<br>\naffirms his wholehearted commitment to the success of the Asia<br>\nPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) process.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh from the successes of his peace negotiations in the<br>\nMiddle East and Haiti, Clinton will be working toward the<br>\nobjective of securing increased cooperation in all facets of<br>\nrelationships among the 18 member countries.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton, who hosted the highly successful first APEC leaders<br>\nmeeting in Seattle, Washington, in November of last year, has<br>\ngone on record on numerous occasions to champion the ideals of<br>\nAPEC. Speaking at the Group of Seven Summit in Tokyo last year,<br>\nClinton stated that APEC was the most promising forum for<br>\nachieving a more open regional economy and for encouraging<br>\neconomic growth and opportunity throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton has for many years advocated greater U.S. involvement<br>\nin the Asia-Pacific rim on the trade and economic fronts.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our first priority in foreign policy measures must be to<br>\nstimulate the American economy,\" Clinton said in a 1992 speech.<br>\n\"I have formed a strategy to increase the performance of our<br>\npeople, support productivity, encourage innovation and<br>\ninvestment, lower the national debt and create the strongest<br>\ntrade nation in the world.\"<\/p>\n<p>Clinton will also be targeting a more political direction for<br>\nthe fledgling APEC, according to Sandra Kristoff, Special<br>\nAssistant to the U.S. president and Senior Director for Asia and<br>\nPacific Economic Affairs at the National Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>\"I think that it is fair to say that there is an emerging<br>\nconsensus among APEC economies that issues of trade and<br>\ninvestment, facilitation and liberalization need to be moved<br>\ncenter stage in APEC's agenda,\" Kristoff said in Washington,<br>\nD.C., in October of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton will find a welcome ally in President Soeharto, the<br>\nhost of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, who has also voiced<br>\nsupport for freer trade among APEC countries.<\/p>\n<p>This advertising section composed by Bruce Emond from<br>\nmaterials provided by the United States Information Services<br>\n(USIS).<\/p>",
