Clinton assistant here for Jakarta-Arkansas synergy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An assistant to President Bill Clinton paid a
\ncourtesy call to President Soeharto yesterday evening during
\nwhich he discussed the progress of the sister state relationship
\nbetween the U.S. state of Arkansas and Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"I'm here in a personal capacity to discuss the sister state
\nrelationship between Jakarta and Arkansas," said Mark Grobmyer
\nafter meeting with President Soeharto at his residence on Jl.
\nCendana, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, Grobmyer
\nsaid that Arkansas was looking at potential areas of cooperation
\nwith Jakarta in the economic, banking, electronic and cultural
\nfields.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi and Governor Jim Tucker in Seattle last
\nNovember signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing
\nsister state relations between Jakarta and Arkansas. The signing
\nof the MOU was witnessed by both Soeharto and Clinton who was
\ngovernor of Arkansas prior to his election as president.<\/p>\n
"My main objective in coming to Indonesia is to meet with the
\nGovernor of Jakarta and further discuss cooperation between
\nJakarta and Arkansas," Grobmyer explained.<\/p>\n
"The two have many opportunities in many areas, among them
\nbusiness, investment and education," he said.<\/p>\n
At present cooperation arrangements exist between the Harapan
\nKita hospital and a children's hospital in Arkansas and research
\nwork between the faculties of medicine at the University of
\nIndonesia and the University of Arkansas.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi also asserted the importance of the
\ncooperation saying, "Jakarta is looking for opportunities, and
\none of those opportunities is Arkansas."<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters, Grobmyer denied that he brought any
\nspecial message from President Clinton since his visit here is
\nstrictly in a private capacity. (mds)<\/p>",
