Clerics announce holy war<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): At least 100 prominent Moslem figures from the
\nTangerang regency branch of Islamic group Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)
\nhave pledged to mount a holy war against any parties trying to
\nbreak up the country's Moslem society.<\/p>\n
In a gathering at the Al Ittihad mosque here on Tuesday, all
\nthe clerics said they would risk their lives in the name of the
\nAlmighty God (Jihad Fisabilillah) to fight against those who
\nattempted to besmirch Islam.<\/p>\n
The gathering cited the killing spree in Banyuwangi, East Java
\nas the current attempt to break up Moslem unity.<\/p>\n
The killing of Nahdliyins, NU members who were allegedly black
\nmagic practitioners, had surpassed what could be considered
\nhealthy, they said.<\/p>\n
Without attempting to degrade the Armed Forces' (ABRI) role in
\ndefending the country's stability, the local NU leaders -- along
\nwith its security personnel from its Banser youth wing, Pagar
\nNusa self-defense group and the Al-Hikmah School -- vowed to
\nprotect all local Moslem clerics and teachers of the Koran from
\nany threats spread by irresponsible groups.<\/p>\n
Also attending the gathering were Tangerang regent Agus
\nDjunara, Tangerang Police chief Lt. Col. Pudji Hartanto Iskandar
\nand Tangerang Military Commander Lt. Col. Maris Wiryadi.<\/p>\n
The three asked the public to take part in securing the area
\nby reporting any suspicious persons or terrors immediately to the
\nsecurity authorities. They warned the leaders not to beat up
