'Claudia' causes heavy downpour in Bali<\/p>\n

Following the recent Cyclone Chris, a new tropical cyclone now
\ncalled Claudia has started to appear in Northern Australia since
\nMonday causing heavy rains as its negative impacts in East Java,
\nBali, West and East Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n
Putu Pudja, head of Bali's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency,
\ntold the Jakarta Post yesterday that in the last seven days, the
\nmeasure of the rainfall in Bali and its neighboring areas already
\nreached 170.4 mm as compared to normal level at about 50 mm.<\/p>\n
Putu also said that the speed of the wind already reached 51
\nkilometers per hours and the sea waves reached four meter high.<\/p>\n
\"We warn people living on the slopes of the mountains and
\ncoastal areas to be more alert,\" Putu said.<\/p>\n
Cyclone Claudia has increased the number of water drops which
\ncreated heavy clouds and rains particularly in the eastern part
\nof Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"This situation could probably last until the end of
\nFebruary,\" Putu added.<\/p>\n
In the center of the cyclone in North Australia, the air
\npressure was still very low approximately around 1000mb. This
\ncould mean, Putu explained, the cyclone could intensify within
\nthe next two or three days.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that the new cyclone will not create more
\nenvironmental problems but we must stay on alert to anticipate
\nany possible impacts,\" Putu said.<\/p>\n
Several areas in East Java, Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara
\nhad been hard hit by tropical cyclone Chris early this months.<\/p>\n
Landslides, floods and thunderstorms occurred in these
\nrespected areas were linked to the cyclone Chris.<\/p>\n
Serious landslides occurred in Taro village in Gianyar, South
\nBali, as well as in Pancasari village in the bordering areas of
\nBedugul and Singaraja in North Bali. In Jembrana, West Bali, a
\nnumber of houses were hit by high tide and strong sea waves.<\/p>\n
Wayan Suardhana, head of Meteorology and Geophysics Agency
\nin Selaparang airport, Mataram in Lombok Island, West Nusa
\nTenggara, confirmed yesterday that the Chris had caused several
\nareas in Lombok including Selong Belanak, Kepal, Terake and other
\nvillages in Central Lombok and in Ampenan, Mataram were inundated
\nby floods.<\/p>\n
The water level in that affected village reached between 1 and
\n4 meter high damaging hundreds of houses, hectares of rice fields
\nand drowning thousands of cattle and poultry. Land and sea
\ntransportations were also disturbed.<\/p>\n
\"The new cyclone Claudia will likely have similar impact to
\nthe areas in West and East Nusa Tenggara if it is strengthening,\"
\nWayan said. Currently, the weather in West Nusa Tenggara province
\nis cloudy and rainy.<\/p>\n
\"We will continue monitor the cyclone very closely to prevent
\nfrom more damages,\" he said.<\/p>",
