Anthropic has ceased support for the third-party platform OpenClaw in its Claude AI subscription service due to the excessive computational load it imposes on their systems amid surging demand for the AI model. The decision, announced by Claude Code head Boris Cherny, takes effect immediately and stems from OpenClaw's usage violating terms of service and overwhelming capacity, following Claude's top ranking on the US Apple App Store in March. OpenClaw's founder expressed disappointment, noting attempts to persuade Anthropic otherwise, as the platform has gained popularity for automating daily tasks and workflows through AI agents.

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, has discontinued
support for the third-party platform OpenClaw on its Claude chatbot
subscription service. This step was taken because the use of OpenClaw is
deemed to burden Anthropic’s computational capacity. Claude Code head at
Anthropic, Boris Cherny, stated that starting from Saturday at 12:00
local time, Claude AI subscriptions will no longer support integration
with OpenClaw. Cherny explained that the policy to halt support for
OpenClaw was driven by a recent surge in demand for Claude. The AI model
has reportedly experienced an increase in usage demand and even topped
the rankings on the United States Apple App Store in March. Due to the
high demand, Anthropic has also reportedly adjusted usage limits for
subscribers. “We have been working hard to meet the demand for Claude,
and our subscriptions are not designed for usage patterns from
third-party tools like this,” Cherny wrote in a post on social media
platform X (formerly Twitter). An Anthropic spokesperson also stated
that using Claude through third-party tools like OpenClaw violates the
terms of service and places a “disproportionate burden” on the system.
OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger said on X that he, along with Dave
Morin, a member of the OpenClaw Foundation board, had previously tried
to “persuade” Anthropic to reverse the decision to end support. “We told
Anthropic that many subscribers only subscribed because of OpenClaw, and
it would be a loss if they were cut off,” Steinberger told Business
Insider via text message. “But now they are trying to announce this
quietly on Friday night,” he explained, as quoted by KompasTekno from
Business Insider. OpenClaw itself is an AI agent platform that allows
users to run AI services like Claude to perform various tasks
automatically. This assistant can handle various tasks in other
applications and assist with users’ workflows. OpenClaw’s popularity is
even said to have sparked a trend in AI usage. Some users utilise this
technology to manage their daily activities. One startup founder even
admitted to having created nine AI agents to handle administrative work
and household needs.
",
