Classical Javanese dance worth seeing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Famous choreographer Retno Maruti is back
\nperforming the classic Javanese dance Sekar Pembayun at the Grand
\nBallroom, The Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta, on Sept. 9, the
\norganizing committee said on Friday.<\/p>\n
The show will be sponsored by Bimasena, the Indonesian Mines
\nand Energy Society, which helps promote Indonesian cultural
\nheritage through the involvement of mining and energy
\nentrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
Performed by Maruti's Padnecwara dance company, Sekar Pembayun
\nwon huge accolades for its performances at the Jakarta Institute
\nof Art in February and in Yogyakarta in April.<\/p>\n
The Sekar Pembayun, a 75-minute dance, is a romantic tragedy
\nabout the protagonist, Sekar Pembayun, who was the daughter of
\nKing Panembahan Senapati, the founder of the ancient Mataram
\nKingdom. The king sent his daughter on an undercover mission with
\nthe intention of having his political archrival, the invincible
\nKi Ageng Mangir, killed.<\/p>\n
Unaware of Senapati's plan, Ki Ageng Mangir fell in love with
\nPembayun and married her. Pembayun managed to arrange an audience
\nwith Senapati for Mangir, who ended up being killed by her
\nfather.<\/p>\n
Maruti, 51, is an accomplished classical Javanese dancer who
\naims to promote the Javanese performing arts among the
