Clashes unavoidable<\/p>\n

Clashes between supporters of the People's Awakening Party
\n(PKB) and the United Development Party (PPP) in Jepara (Pikiran
\nRakyat, May 2) and similar happenings in the run-up to the
\ngeneral election are \"unavoidable\" indeed. Why must they take
\nplace? Because it must be admitted that there is only a small
\nnumber of followers who know the ins and outs of the general
\nelection.<\/p>\n
There are at least three things people should know.
\nFirst, people should know what the objective is of the general
\nelection. Second, people should know the role and function of
\nlegislative candidates. Third, people should know their party's
\nmission and vision. As long as these three things are not
\nunderstood by a party's followers or sympathizers, there will
\npossibly be clashes between party supporters whenever and
\nwherever they meet.<\/p>\n
It is compulsory for party leaders and cadres to give
\npolitical education to followers and sympathizers. Party leaders
\nshould not only state that they deplore and condemn clashes after
\none takes place, they should also take concrete measures to avoid
\nsimilar clashes in the future.<\/p>\n
It is time for party followers to realize that there are more
\nimportant things than parades and joining convoys without knowing
\nwhat it is all about.<\/p>\n
Clashes harm people: children, husbands, wives, parents,
\nsiblings. Political people only voice their concern, regret and
\ncondemnation.<\/p>\n
What is more important now is to know who are the prospective
\nlegislators in a chosen party. Candidates unknown to us may not
\nor do not want to understand our aspirations. It is even possible
\nthat they are unfamiliar with the area of the province they
\nrepresent.<\/p>\n
We must understand all this instead of taking to the streets
\nin great numbers. Apart from preventing clashes, it could train
\nus to become more mature in politics and to be ready to differ
\nwith and appreciate other people's opinions.<\/p>\n
Let us build this country with a mature outlook on things
\nincluding politics. Let a victory in the general election this
\ntime be a victory for the entire population.<\/p>\n
