Civil servants duped<\/p>\n

Minister of Transmigration Siswono Yudohusodo has reported to
\nPresident Soeharto the scam by a number of housing developers for
\ncivil servants who have made down payments for houses. (Merdeka,
\nDec. 17).<\/p>\n
The duped customers are from Siswono's ministry and the
\nNational Family Planning Board. With Rp 1 million per head, the
\nmoney collected reached Rp 2.5 billion.<\/p>\n
With these funds there is no valid reason for the developers
\nto postpone construction of the very simple houses. The minister
\nis surprised that the developers work together with the Workers
\nCooperative, an organization supervised by the Jakarta
\nAdministration. The organization is known for its achievements in
\nbuilding low-cost and simple houses.<\/p>\n
I trust that Minister Siswono, a former state minister of
\npublic housing, will settle the matter to everybody's
\nsatisfaction.<\/p>\n
This case should serve as a warning to prospective buyers, who
\nwould do well to exert caution if a down payment is required for
\nhouses still to be constructed.<\/p>\n
