From Pelita<\/p>\n
Referring to a letter published in Pelita on May 29, 1997,
\nunder the heading Illegal fees abundant at religious office in
\nMaluku, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, after having consulted
\nits provincial office, would like to explain the matter as
\nfollows.<\/p>\n
Within the context of an effort to recruit new civil servants
\nin the Maluku province, candidates who pass written and oral
\nexams were required to pay a fee used for financing a
\npsychological test and background check. The psychological test
\nwas carried out by the manpower office and the background check
\nby the local military command.<\/p>\n
All documents of candidates were processed in Jakarta. It was
\nthe wish of successful candidates that documents were taken in
\nperson to Jakarta by staff of the personnel department, not using
\nthe post office or other expedition agencies, for safety and
\nsecurity reasons. For these reasons they were willing to pay the
\ntransportation and living costs of staff when in Jakarta. Out of
\n106 documents, 104 had been processed and delivered to respective
\ncandidates.<\/p>\n
The money collected from candidates was partly used for making
\ntest copies. However, in response to the social correction, the
\nMaluku Religious Office has decided to refund candidates' money,
\nexcept that which was spent on psychological tests and background
\nchecks.<\/p>\n
In regards to the madrasah (private Islamic-oriented schools)
\nwhich were to be given government-owned status, we need to stress
\nthat the Religious Office has never collected fees from any
\nmadrasah concerned. However, some madrasah that enthusiastically
\nwanted to be given government status voluntarily contributed
\nmoney to the Religious Office. Their money has also been returned
\nby the office.<\/p>\n
